What we teach
At Sensei Chelle Self Defence, we believe that everyone deserves the ability to protect themselves. We empower individuals who want practical self-defence without the commitment to mastering a full martial art. Our courses were made for women and are taught by women, join us to learn valuable skills that can make a difference your safety and confidence.

our Self defence course
The self defence course we teach, originally came from the martial arts commission (MAC, now NAKMAS), when the top martial artists came together to a solve a problem - teaching women that don't want to be martial arts masters how to defend themselves effectively in a short amount of time.
Whereas ordinary self defence courses are commonly a grab-bag of the instructor's favourites, the MAC self defence course is carefully constructed to make use of valid techniques, linked together into a logical learning sequence. The course is designed to ensure that after careful training, can provide a basic level of competence in self-defence after only a few weeks training.

There is no one martial art which contains all of the best self defence techniques, and it is only by selecting from all the martial arts that a definitive course can be developed. This course comprises a selection of the most effective techniques from Karate, Aikido, Jiu-Jitsu and Kung-fu. These techniques have been selected by experts in each martial art and compiled into a self-defence course.

Sensei Chelle was one of the first people to be qualified to teach this course, and has been doing so for the last 40 years.
With the addition of the female experience, motherhood of four daughters, real life situations and stories of women, and current day problems, Sensei Chelle has enhanced the course with expert advice for women, from women.

Course content
This course is for all women, no mater of your age or fitness level, and is suitable for complete beginners. This course is all about avoidance, awareness and escape, and we tailor the courses differently for each age group, as it stands to reason that, a 12 year old girl will find herself in different situations than a 58 year old woman, although the core principals are the same.
One of our core principles is, that it is better to use a spontaneous, natural response than to fumble with a half-learned technique. So we will work with you, individually to practice techniques that work best for you. We are often asked "what if?", this course is arranged systematically from basic movements such as simply how to stand, and we build upon that to encompass all of the "what-ifs".

Ways to learn with us
Jiu-jitsu
Sensei chelle holds a black belt - 4th Dan in Jiu-jitsu and teaches the martial art to children and young people. Jiu-jitsu is an ancient Japanese martial art focused on self-defence and combat, emphasising the use of an opponent's own energy against them.
It was developed by the samurai to complement swordsmanship, providing a way to fight without weapons or when a weapon was lost in close-quarters combat. The art is characterized by the principle of jū ("gentle" or "yielding"), which involves bending or redirecting an opponent's force rather than directly opposing it to gain control.
